How exaclty does a Gas Blowback Airsoft Pistol Work?
I’m thinking of buying one but I don’t know how it works, like, would I need to buy new mini gas canisters when it runs out?
Does it even literally run on compressed air?
Like, what does it run on and do I need to replenish it?
You start by using Green Gas, which is propane that has added silicon lube for the maintenance of the pistol or rifle. You take the green gas can, and locate the fill valve on the bottom of the magazine and fill it to capacity. Then you load the BBs into the top of the magazine until it has reached capacity.
We will use a pistol for example since they are the most common green gas powered airsoft gun.
Insert the magazine into the pistol, and rack it like any other pistol. The feeder will strip the top BB from the magazine and load it into the barrel. The hammer will be locked back and when you pull the trigger, the hammer will fall and usually hit a faux-firing pin. The real action is slightly below the hammer, but either way the hammer does set off the gun. The magazine releases a charge of green gas and it is released by the feeder which has a nozzle around the loaded BB for a seal-effect. The expanding gas carries the BB down the barrel and toward your target. The slide will blow backwards from the pressure and the hammer will be reset and a new BB will be stripped from the magazine and loaded. The overall operation is exactly like a real pistol, so it is very easy to pick up.
The slide will lock rearwards like a real firearm after the last BB has been fired. Insert a new magazine with ammunition and release the slide catch to continue. You can dry-fire the pistol on gas alone if you release the slide catch with a gas-charged but BB-empty magazine.
Would I need to buy new gas canisters when it runs out?
Well, yes, but the canisters do not go into the pistol or rifle like paintball. You just load up the magazine as previously described. It just transfers the propellent from one larger storage unit to a smaller one inside the magazine. A can of green gas will usually go for quite a while, and most magazines can be loaded twice before a charge of green gas runs out.
Does it literally run on compressed air?
No, just the mix of propane and silicon oil that is called Green Gas by the community. It is a gas though, so in warmer temperatures it will perform better than in colder ones due to density and expansion. This leads to better ‘gas economy’ and higher FPS in warmer temperatures.
